Als (verplicht) deel van de cursus Computerarchitectuur wordt volgende week donderdag
een voordracht gegeven door Timothy Lanfear van NVIDIA over het gebruik van Graphical Processing Units (GPUs).

CUDA is a general purpose architecture for writing highly parallel applications. It provides several key abstractions — a hierarchy of thread blocks, shared memory, and
barrier synchronization — for scalable high-performance parallel computing. Scientists throughout industry and academia use CUDA to achieve dramatic speedups on
production and research codes. The CUDA architecture supports many languages, programming environments, and libraries including C/C++, Fortran, OpenCL, DirectCompute,
Python, Matlab, FFT, LAPACK, etc. The course will teach the basics of CUDA C programming, give an overview of the various tools, and introduce some of the considerations
necessary for obtaining high performance from GPU applications.
Timothy Lanfear is a Solution Architect in NVIDIA’s Professional Solutions Group, promoting the use of the NVIDIA Tesla™ computing solution for high-performance
computing. He has nearly twenty years’ experience in HPC, starting as a computational scientist in British Aerospace’s corporate research centre, then moving to technical
pre-sales roles with Hitachi, ClearSpeed, and most recently NVIDIA. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD for research in the field of graph theory, both from Imperial College London.
